Bulgarian artist, Elena Peteva, who lives and works in the United States, presents her new solo exhibition “Of Smoke and Ash” in Sofia.

Тhe presented body of work explores personal and global themes through allegorical representation. The image functions as a signifier that creates a delicate net of subtle meanings. Peteva seeks a distilled representation, an impossible stillness that captures the ephemeral essence of “now”, the memory of the past and the sense of what is to come, and creates a deeper reality.

The exhibition includes charcoal drawings, mixed media collages and video installation.

Elena Peteva works in drawing, painting, and video installation. She has exhibited in solo shows and numerous group exhibitions in Bulgaria, the United States and abroad. Her work has been included in many public and private art collections and art publications. Peteva is a three-time recipient of the prestigious Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation’s international grant for contemporary art, among other professional recognitions. Born in Bulgaria, Elena Peteva is an Associate Professor of Painting and Drawing at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Peteva’s home and studio are in Providence, Rhode Island.
